    Session 7:
Triggers, Risk Factors & Healthy Decisions

A self-guided educational module designed to help participants recognize triggers, identify high-risk situations, strengthen protective factors, practice healthy boundaries, and make intentional decisions that support personal and family goals.

Estimated Time: 60 Minutes Healthy Decision-Making Self-Guided Module
    Course Progress 0%
    Welcome

Recognize It Before You Respond to It

    Peaceful road representing intentional choices

Healthy decisions often begin before a decision actually has to be made. When people understand their triggers, environments, emotions, pressures, and warning signs, they have more opportunity to prepare.

A trigger does not automatically cause a behavior. A risk factor does not guarantee a negative outcome. Both are signals that tell us to slow down, become more aware, and make an intentional choice.

Session Goal By the end of this module, you should be able to identify triggers, recognize at least four risk factors, identify at least four protective strategies, practice healthy boundaries, and create a personal plan for making safer and more intentional decisions.
    Lesson 1

    What Is a Trigger?

A trigger is something that creates a strong emotional reaction, urge, memory, thought, or impulse. Triggers can be different for every person.

    Triggers May Be External

    • A person
    • A disagreement
    • A certain environment
    • Social pressure
    • A stressful phone call
    • Conflict at home
    • Money problems
    • A particular event or situation

    Triggers May Also Be Internal

    • Anger
    • Loneliness
    • Stress
    • Fear
    • Boredom
    • Sadness
    • Feeling rejected
    • Feeling overwhelmed
    • Exhaustion
Trigger Does Not Mean Automatic Reaction A trigger may explain why a reaction feels strong, but it does not remove the ability to make a choice about what happens next.
    Lesson 2

    Triggers Have Warning Signs

    Person reflecting quietly

The body and mind often provide warning signs before a person makes an impulsive or unhealthy decision.

    Physical Warning Signs

    • Heart beating faster
    • Tight muscles
    • Feeling hot
    • Restlessness
    • Shaking
    • Headache or tension
    • Feeling physically overwhelmed

    Emotional or Mental Warning Signs

    • “I don't care anymore.”
    • “Forget it.”
    • Feeling unusually angry or irritated
    • Feeling hopeless
    • Wanting immediate relief
    • Difficulty thinking through consequences
    • Wanting to escape the situation quickly
Awareness Creates Space The earlier you recognize a warning sign, the more opportunity you have to pause before reacting.
    Lesson 3

Risk Factors: What Increases the Chance of a Poor Decision?

Risk factors are circumstances that can make healthy decision-making more difficult. They do not determine what a person will do.

    Situational Risks

    High-risk environments

    Peer pressure

    Conflict

    Easy access

    Lack of planning

    Personal Risks

    High stress

    Impulsivity

    Isolation

    Exhaustion

    Difficulty coping

Risk can increase when several factors happen at the same time. For example, a person may be stressed, tired, angry, and surrounded by people encouraging an unhealthy choice.

Ask Yourself “What is happening around me AND inside me right now?”
    Lesson 4

Protective Factors: Build Strength Around the Risk

    Supportive people spending time together

Protective factors are people, habits, environments, beliefs, resources, and strategies that support healthier decisions.

    Examples Include:

    • Supportive family members
    • Healthy friendships
    • Clear personal values
    • Faith or spiritual support
    • Healthy routines
    • Parenting responsibilities
    • Employment and personal goals
    • Healthy coping skills
    • Accountability
    • Professional support when appropriate
    • Leaving unsafe environments
    • Having a plan before pressure occurs
Protection Is Intentional Protective factors become stronger when they are actually used. Knowing that support exists is different from reaching out for support.
    Lesson 5

    Know Your High-Risk Situations

A high-risk situation is a circumstance where several triggers or risk factors may be present and the likelihood of an unhealthy decision may increase.

Example A person has had a stressful week, is angry after an argument, has not slept well, and receives an invitation to spend time in an environment where they know they often feel pressured to make choices that conflict with their goals.

Instead of waiting until the person is already in the situation, healthy decision-making begins earlier.

    NOTICE
    the risk
    PLAN
    ahead
    CHOOSE
    your boundary
    PROTECT
    your goal
    Lesson 6

    Healthy Boundaries Protect Healthy Decisions

    People having a respectful conversation

A boundary is a limit that helps protect your safety, values, responsibilities, and goals.

A healthy boundary does not require a long explanation. Sometimes a clear and respectful statement is enough.

Examples of Boundary Statements “No, I'm not doing that.”

    “That doesn't work for me.”

“I have responsibilities tomorrow, so I'm leaving.”

    “I'm not comfortable with that.”

    “I've already made my decision.”
You Do Not Have to Win the Argument A boundary is about communicating your decision. It does not require another person to agree with it.
    Practice Scenario

    “Just This One Time”

Scenario A person has been working toward important family and personal goals. A friend invites them into a situation that could create problems with those goals. When the person hesitates, the friend says, “It's just this one time. Stop worrying so much.”

This is where triggers, risk factors, protective factors, and boundaries work together.

    Lesson 7

    Pause Before the Decision

Person taking time to pause and reflect

When emotions are high, the brain may focus more heavily on immediate relief or immediate results. A pause creates time to consider the larger picture.

    Use the P.A.U.S.E. Questions

    P — What pressure am I feeling?

A — What could this action affect?

    U — What do I ultimately want?

S — What safer choice is available?

E — What effect could this have tomorrow?

    Lesson 8

    Your Environment Matters

Sometimes healthy decision-making requires changing more than a thought. It may require changing the environment.

    Environmental Strategies Can Include:

    • Leaving a situation
    • Not attending certain events
    • Choosing different social activities
    • Limiting contact with people who repeatedly pressure you
    • Removing unnecessary access to risky situations
    • Planning transportation ahead of time
    • Keeping supportive people available
    • Creating healthy routines
Changing the Environment Is Still a Decision Sometimes the strongest decision is not proving that you can handle a high-risk environment. It is deciding that the environment is not worth the risk to your goals.
    Personal Application

My Trigger & Healthy Decision Plan

    Quiet reflection and personal planning

Use what you have learned to create a personal plan. This plan is about awareness and preparation—not labeling yourself or assuming a particular behavior.

    Final Reflection

    Protect the Life You're Building

Healthy decisions are easier when you understand what increases risk and what strengthens protection.

You may not control every situation, every emotion, every invitation, or another person's behavior. You can work on recognizing triggers, setting boundaries, using support, changing environments when needed, and making choices that support your responsibilities and goals.

Session 7 Summary Trigger → Recognize it.
Risk factor → Prepare for it.
    Pressure → Set a boundary.
    Protective factor → Use it.
Decision → Think beyond the moment.
Please complete all required questions before submitting your module.

    Session 7 Complete!

After submitting, your completed responses will be forwarded for review. Please make sure every required activity has been completed before selecting Complete & Submit Session 7.
